✦ The Midlife Self-Care Reset - Part 3 of 3

Your Midlife Self-Care Blueprint:
How to Make It Stick

You already know what to do. You have known for a while. And that is exactly why it is so frustrating that it still is not happening consistently. But here is what I want you to understand: knowing was never the problem."

Welcome to the last part of the Midlife Self-Care Reset series. In Part 1, we talked about what has changed in your body. In Part 2, I shared four pillars that really work for you now. Today, we focus on turning what you know into what you do. Information only matters if you use it. Here is your guide to making these changes last, not perfectly or all at once, but in a way that fits your real life. Even with a busy schedule and a body that needs new things, you can do this. Let’s do it together.

The Question Women Ask Most

"Why do I keep falling off my self-care routine even when I genuinely want to change?"

It is not a willpower problem. It is not a discipline problem. It is a design problem. Routines built for someone else's life, or a younger version of your life, will fail every time. Here is the good news? Design is something you can fix.

Four Reasons Why Self-Care Does Not Stick

Reason 01

Trying to change too much at once

Trying to change everything by Monday will guarantee failure by Wednesday. Focus on one to three habits at a time. Starting small is not settling. It is strategy.

Reason 02

Waiting for a calmer season that never arrives

In midlife, many women are managing their career, family, and aging parents - these are not obstacles to your self-care but the circumstances it lives within.  Prioritize self-care by not waiting for more time but starting with less. The best time for self-care is right now.

Reason 03

Treating a missed day as total failure

The key to success is not to look at missing one day as failure. Deciding it is over after one miss is the problem most women make. Consistency is measured in how quickly you return.

Reason 04

The guilt is louder than the intention

Why is it that whenever you choose yourself, you always hear an internal voice saying you should be doing something for someone else? That guilt is conditioning, not truth. Naming it is the first step to moving through it.

The Blueprint - Four Principles That Make Self-Care Stick

Principle 01 - Habit Stacking

Attach New Habits to Things You Already Do

Instead of setting aside time you don’t have, add a new self-care practice to something you are already doing automatically. For example, after I make my morning coffee, I step outside for five minutes of sunlight. After I brush my teeth at night, I stretch for three minutes. Making these small changes to your normal routine makes it easy to successfully incorporate new self-care habits into your life. Here is the good news: when you follow this process over time, they become automatic.  This is how a sustainable daily self-care routine actually gets built.

Your Action

Write down your new self-care habit: "After I [existing habit], I will [new self-care practice]." Specific habits help you to survive busy weeks. Vague intentions do not.

Principle 02 - Minimum Effective Dose

Build Three Descriptions of Every Habit

For every practice you want to build, create a full description for good days, a medium description for average days, and a minimum description for tough days. For example: A 30-minute walk on good days becomes 15 minutes on a medium day, becomes a five-minute stroll around the block on tough days. On a hard day, the minimum description keeps things going. And keeping things going is what creates lasting change.

✦ Your Action

Write your full, medium, and minimum descriptions right now. On a hard day, your only job is the minimum. That is enough. It is just that easy.

Principle 03 - Identity-Based Care

Shift From Saying "I Am Trying To" to "I Am Someone Who"

Stop saying, "I am trying to take better care of myself." When you say this, you are only making an observation. Instead, you should say, "I am a woman who prioritizes her wellbeing." Now, you are speaking from inside of a new identity, and your behavior begins to align with it. Every small self-care action is a vote for the woman you are becoming. You do not need to feel like her yet. You just need to vote.

✦ Your Action

Complete this statement and put it somewhere that is visible: "I am a woman who _____." Read it every morning before your day begins.

Principle 04 - Support Structures

Stop Trying to Do This Alone

Let me share a secret with you: women who have a support system maintain their health habits significantly longer than those without one. The women who thrive through midlife are not the most disciplined. They are the most supported. This could be an accountability partner, a community that understands this season of her life, a coach who has walked this same path herself. The truth is, you were not designed to navigate this season of your life alone, and you do not have to.

✦ Your Action

Identify one person or community to share your self-care journey with this month. Naming it out loud makes it real. Sharing it makes you significantly more likely to follow through.
